Makalo Mohale grew up in Botshabelo east of Bloemfontein in the Free State and started his political activism while studying at the University of the Free State. He served South African Students Congress (SASCO) as the branch Chairperson between 2002 and 2003 and as its Provincial Secretary from 2003 to 2004. He also led NEHAWU branch as the chairperson from 2006 till 2007.
He led ANC Branches from 2002 to 2004 (Deputy Secretary of Thutong branch, Mangaung) and 2008 to 2011 (BEC member in Parys, Ngwathe).
He also led ANCYL branch from 2002—2004 in UFS and between 2008 and 2011 as branch Chairperson in Parys. In 2013 was appointed a Provincial convener of the Youth League in Free State and subsequently elected Provincial Chairperson in 2014. He was re-elected as the Provincial Chairperson in 2017 till present.
Professional Career
Makalo Mohale served his law articles in Bloemfontein in 2004 and later worked at Free State Legislature as Public Participation Officer from late 2004 till 2007. He then worked in Ngwathe Local Municipality as supply chain manager till 2012.
He later joined Mangaung Metro as the spokesperson of the Executive Mayor till 2013. He proceeded to work as Director Supply Chain in the Free State Department of Police Roads and Transport from April 2013 until his secondment as the Free State Premier’s Spokesperson 2015. Later that year, he was appointed in the Free State Department of Human Settlements as Chief Director Housing Programmes till 2019 May when he was appointed as the MEC for the Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs.

Post-Graduate: Drafting of Contracts (UJ)
Diploma: Corporate Law (UJ)
As a young public representative, MEC Makalo brings with him to DESTEA, a renewed energy and fresh ideas to ensure that the department executes its mandate for championing economic development and job creation in the Free State.
He is now serving in the Free State as the newly appointed MEC for Education.
